Super Cheap Family Meals Kids Love

Creating a super cheap family meals the kids will enjoy is simple.

My kids love hot dogs and hot dogs are cheap.

Add a box of macaroni and cheese and I promise you will have an instant kid approved meal.

But instead of using a boring bun turn the family meal into something fun.

Let the kids help make this $5 family dinner.

Pigs in a Blanket

1 pkg. hot dog ($0.69 at wal-mart)

1 can crescent rolls ($0.97 at wal-mart)

2 box of macaroni and cheese ($0.50 each at wal-mart)

1 can carrots ($0.50 at wal-mart)

Pre-heat oven according to crescent roll directions. Unroll crescent rolls and pull apart one at a time to wrap around 1 hot dog for each roll (this is the fun part for kids!). Bake according to directions on can. Cook macaroni and cheese according to directions on box while pigs in the blanket are baking. Serve with carrots. Feeds 4-5.

TIP: Use the left overs for an easy make ahead lunch.

I’m not a big hotdog fan but boy my kids are. I made this for them and let them help roll the dogs and they thought that was neat!! Not to mention talk about cleaning their plates. Thanks for the great ideas I will definatley keep checking back!!!!

  • I know it’s hard sometimes to let the kids help with our busy schedules but I try to set one night a week where the kids can help cook, they love it and its creating one of those mommy moments we will love back on and cherish.

My kids love these too but we add a half slice of american cheese rolled up between the cresent roll and hot dog instead of having mac and cheese.

  • Hi Beth…I like the idea of adding cheese…Thanks for the visit!!

You can also make pizza dogs this way. Use some mozzarella cheese, a hot dog, some pepperoni, and a little spaghetti sauce. Roll up and bake the same way.

For my “regular” pigs in a blanket I slice the hot dog from end to end but not all the way through (one long slit) and I stuff it with american cheese and a little bit of diced onion. Roll up and bake per directions on crescent rolls.
